Nusa Dua, Bali – An Alternate Edit

by on Apr.26, 2011, under Photography

We had a great time in Bali. Probably needed a few more days to unwind. But it served its purpose to have an Easter break and test flying with James and Amelie. We are now that little bit more prepared for the Dubia -> Venice -> London -> Prague trip. I did’t get the DSLR out as much as I would have hoped. I ended up taking more videos and snaps on the iPhone then I would have initially thought I ever would. I think 2 things really kept the SLR back at the hotel:

  1. Size & weight of carrying it around. Call me slack! But when its so humid you really feel like travelling as light as possible, especially with two kids.
  2. Humidity. Every time you take it out of the A/C’d room it would take around 1 hour for the lens to clear up.

Not to say I didn’t use it, because I did. But not as often. Anyway, I was feeling artistic, so I did an alternative edit to the previous image. I was curious to see how editable iPhone photo’s are. I guess my conclusion is… they are as good as a normal jpeg, nothing great, and noise is really apparent, which is no surprise. I think the image cleaned up OK with the help of Noise Ninja.

Quite a bit of ghosting around the umbrella on the left and the people on the right, but impressive results from an iphone for sure.

Glad to hear you had a nice Easter.

I think you have a topic for a podcast there (regarding iphone over DSLR) even though it has been done before.

    Hi Graham

We are going to Bali in July for the first time ( never really had any desire to go before but friends booked cheap flights so we are going ) so any tips for us.

Interested to hear about the camera fogging up. Did you have it in a bag ?

I see you are off to Europe, we were there last year, loved Venice.

Hi Merv. I did have some annoying problems with the SLR lenses fogging up. I ended up leaving my kit out on our balcony, which was pretty secure as we were on the third floor and we had a reasonable amount of distance between ours and other balconies. I didn’t think we had a zip lock bag big enough for my camera, so I didn’t use the trick of storing the camera in a bag. As it turned out, we actually did have a zip lock bag big enough, which we used on the last day to store our swimming gear before getting on the plane. Funnily enough I have been to Bali twice before this last trip, both other times I vowed to never return… but this time around I want to go back again. Where are you staying? Tip wise, use authorised money exchanges, if bargaining at markets always start at around 20-25% of the initial price, and you want to settle at around 50% of the asking price (typically), don’t get tied up haggling over piddly somes of money with them, it’s not worth the stress. Usual things, food, drink, money, transport through the hotel will be more expensive. To give you an idea, a taxi from Nusa Dua to Kuta from the hotel is 150,000, where a I could negotiate a 80,000 fare from a driver directly. I wouldn’t flash an expensive camera around in the market centres. Food and well priced, avoid water, ice blocks and salads. Brush your teeth using bottled water. Go to the supermarket and buy a 5ltr bottle of water, much cheaper way of keeping hydrated. Have a good holiday :)

    Thanks Graham.

I’ll take a zip lock bag for sure. Not sure were we are staying but I know it’s not at Kuta. I guess we will go into Kuta and have a look but i”m not that interested in haggling for a cheap T shirt or a wooden statue. :) We are keen to get out in the country for a good look around. As I said I’ve never had any desire to go there but It will be an interesting I’m sure.

    Cheers

    Merv.
