Extended Weekend Break
by Graham Leggate on Nov.19, 2009, under Uncategorized
We had a short break down south last week. Unfortunately the location where we stayed, wasn’t where I thought I had booked us into. I was wanting to stay in Dunsborough, however the accommodation was in Capel. Capel isn’t the best place to use as a base for touring around the cape, especially with 2 young children. Next time I will really pay attention to the location of the accommodation!
HDR, take 2:
A holiday wouldn’t be complete without some family pictures

Interesting colours in the first shot… is that a HDR? I like the composition and impending weather.
Great family shot with the Llama or Alpaca and sheep.

Hi Matt. Yes the first image is a HDR… well spotted. Didn’t turn out the best. I was pretty disappointed with my pictures from the weekend. Never mind.

hdr is just the start Graham, I always take my hdr images back into photoshop for further tweaking whick most of the time takes the hdr look out of the pic, go figure!!! Just try tone mapping the single image with the photomatix plug in in photoshop it works a treat. check out my latest tone map here http://christianfletcher.wordpress.com/2009/11/19/photomatix-tone-mapping-plugin-for-photoshop-australian-landscape-photographer/

Thanks for dropping by and commenting… HDR is a new learning curve. I think the HDR look suites architecture based subjects (buildings, planes, cars, etc..) but doesn’t look right on a landscape. So getting that balance of the dynamic range and non-HDR look is a fine line. Anyway under the this same post, I have included a 2nd HDR image of the the same scene, which looks marginally better. I will have a look at the tone mapping plugin for PS. Thanks.

Hi Graham,
Nice work on the HDR mate.
I am also keen to get into this some more for sure.
Cheers,
Mark

The second HDR is much more pleasing for me. I’m still not a HDR fan on the whole, but colours on the second one appear more natural and balanced. It appears I’m being left well behind in the photoshop skills department.
Time to get my book back from Kheng I think….
I’ll have to try Christian’s idea of using HDR then photoshop the photo so it looks less HDR.

Cheers Mark. Slowly learning
Hey Matt, did you ever take a look at this guys work – http://www.red-eyes.co.uk/gallery.html ? If not, well worth a look. I really like his HDR stuff, looks quite cool and funky.

Looks like you had some nice weather even if you had to drive a little way to it. Everyone is having a good crack at HDR and yours seem to have turned out nicely. Mine are consistently crap! Good to have some photos of the kids on holiday to convince them that dad wasn’t always out taking photos!

Thanks Muzz. Weather was OK. Was pretty windy on the Saturday, Sunday was lovely. I have some hit’s and misses with the HDR treatment. I really think it depends on the scene, I’m not convinced that landscape + HDR go together. I think my collection of images is 90% children… not to mention the videos! When they grow up they might be thinking “wow dad took a lot of photos … mostly of us!” So, where is the long awaited blog site?
